The Setters
Hill Estate was originally constructed for the
Ministry of Defence to house RAF personnel
serving at the nearby Saxa Vord base.
Following
closure of the base the Estate now consists of a
mixture of MoD, housing association and
privately owned properties.
Baltasound is
located on the Island of Unst, the most
northerly of the Shetland Isles.
It is well
served by two local shops (one with filling
station), a post office, hotel, junior high
school (with nursery and primary departments),
leisure centre with swimming pool, and health
centre.
There are many
local places of interest such as the Hermaness
National Nature Reserve, Keen of Hamar Reserve,
the Unst Boat Haven & Heritage Centre, Muness
Castle, Muckle Flugga Lighthouse, and the
Valhalla Brewery.
A regular
subsidised ro-ro ferry service connects Unst to
mainland Shetland via the Island of Yell. The
Unst - Yell crossing takes approximately 10
minutes, followed by an 18 mile drive across
Yell. The Yell - mainland Shetland crossing then
takes a further 20 minutes approx.
